Graphic design theory

8 points * One studio hour and one 1-hour lecture per week * Full-year subject * Caulfield

Objectives On successful completion of this subject students will have begun to learn to understand the importance of theory and research within graphic design practice. All projects will involve extensive research and there will be lectures where relevant on formal, sociological, historical and cultural aspects of design. Range of projects: space and colour theory, visual language research, library research methodology for designers, symbols research, research into design in film, language and typography research.

Synopsis Students are introduced to basic design theory through a series of lectures and research-oriented practical projects that will assist in their developing understanding of two and three dimensional design practice. This is a core subject and its successful completion is required as prerequisite to second-year studies.

Assessment Six projects: 100%
