Objectives On successful completion of this subject students should be able to plan, mediate and support the product development process required in DES4000 with particular respect to sourcing appropriate information on the relevant mechanical and electronic components, selection of materials and finishes, manufacturing processes and other technical considerations.
Synopsis Topics include the preparation of technically detailed design specifications prior to prototype and full-scale product manufacture; detailed analyses of materials and manufacturing methods; sourcing of off-the-shelf and standard components; identifying auxiliary manufacturing and supplier network; testing and quality assurance procedures; organisation of tryout and pilot manufacturing runs; and detailed cost analyses.
