13 points * 6 studio hours, 2 laboratory hours and 2 lecture hours per week * Second semester * Caulfield * Prerequisites: DES3002
Objectives On successful completion of this subject students should be able to plan design strategies and generate creative design concepts which can be validated as feasible for manufacture; and demonstrate refined capabilities for self-directed learning along with advanced knowledge and skills suitable for gaining employment in the profession and/or progression to postgraduate studies.
Synopsis This subject promotes a detailed understanding and knowledge of multi-variable design problems and shows students how to coordinate inputs from various disciplines to the design process. The problem solving and design skills repertoire of students will be expanded and refined. Design proposals will be developed with due regard to self-management and organisational skills. Specialist areas such as production engineering, model and prototype construction and quality assurance, along with electronic, mechanical and technical design issues, will be integrated as part of the total approach to the design process.
Assessment Examination of major design projects (portfolio and oral presentation to a panel of examiners) in the areas of: Contemporary products: 70% * Architectural products: 30% * Transportation design studies: 30%
