8 points * 4 studio hours and 2 lecture hours per week * First semester * Caulfield * Prerequisites: DES1103

Objectives On successful completion of this subject students should be able to understand the application of design materials and manufacturing processes in support of project work undertaken in DES2002; demonstrate their skills through the construction of appropriate models including simple prototypes; understand the fundamentals of tool design; and understand and apply relevant electronic principles and devices in design.

Synopsis This subject covers theory and practice in relation to materials and manufacturing processes, with emphasis on design model making and the design of tooling for the manufacture of components from plastic materials. Topics on applied electronics are also covered so that students can incorporate appropriate electronic and electrical devices in design proposals with due regard to safety standards.

Assessment Examination and assignments (applied electronics): 40% * Model making projects: 30% * Tool design assignments: 30%
