Objectives On successful completion of this subject students should be able to demonstrate their knowledge and practical skills in manufacturing processes in the context of small to medium manufacturing enterprises; the dimensional analysis and tolerancing of designs; the application of technical principles (applied mechanics) in relation to structural form and the effects of forces and loads on typical product design structures.
Synopsis Topics covered by lectures, laboratory sessions, exercises and field trips include the theory and technology of low-volume manufacturing processes for plastics; fibreglass reinforced plastics; vacuum forming; decorative and protective coatings; machining processes and related economics; process capability studies and quality control in manufacturing; and the application of applied mechanics and mechanical engineering principles consistent with person-powered and controlled devices.
Assessments Progressive assignments: 40% * Final examination (3 hours): 60%
