Objectives On the successful completion of this subject students will be aware of the evolving position of the computer in the graphic design industry as both a tool used in creation and production of communications, and as a platform for emerging forms of communication. This year-long unit will be divided into areas of study involving different forms of electronic publishing and a practical project. Each student will undertake a series of assigned projects that allow them to utilise electronic imaging and desktop publishing and expand their understanding and skills into the various forms of electronic publishing; develop an understanding of conceptual, managerial, aesthetic and production issues as related to electronic publishing methods; provide a foundation of practical skills and experience in the area of electronic publishing.
Synopsis The evolving role of a graphic designer will be a prominent theme; the abilities, skills and responsibility associated with these forms of communication will be explored and discussed. The various forms of electronic publications have specific considerations that are not applicable to printed publications; specifically, the structure of the information, its interactive potential, and the ability to utilise motion and sound within the presentation/publication. Areas of study to be covered can be loosely described as follows: interactivity fundamentals, WWW publishing, HTML introduction, introduction to multimedia.
Assessment Major projects: 60% * Minor projects: 40%
