History and theory of the crafts
2 points * One 1-hour lecture and one 1-hour tutorial per week * First semester * Peninsula * Prerequisites: CFT2461, CFT2462 or CER2721 or CER2722
Objectives On successful completion of this subject students should be able to through concepts and through practice to orientate themselves into social life and its three main functions as a context for their craft.
Synopsis In this unit we explore ways in which the arts, crafts and design function in the ecological/economic and socio-political domains of society. In the economic domain we study the history and recent developments of ways in which craft is produced, distributed and `consumed'. In the political domain craft is considered as an institution. Topics include professional organisations; government support structures at local and national levels - their standards and impact; communications, magazines, books, journals, exhibitions, conferences, media, conferences.
Assessment Subject record: 50% * Group project including an individual report on the group's dynamics: 50%
