Department of Anatomy

Prize in Anatomy sponsored by Churchill Livingstone Publishers

A prize of a copy of Gray's Anatomy (value approximately $250), sponsored by Churchill Livingstone Publishers, is awarded to the student with the highest aggregate of marks in Anatomy ANT2011/2022 and Anatomy ANT3011/3022. The name of the recipients are displayed on an honour board in the Anatomy museum.


Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology

Linbrook Medal

A medal and prize of $150 awarded to the top two students in second year biochemistry who intend to further their studies in third year biochemistry.

Merck Medal

A medal awarded to outstanding students in fourth year biochemistry honours.


Departments of Chemical Engineering and Chemistry

Society of Chemical Industry of Victoria Prize

A prize of $100 is awarded for excellence in a major course component which is clearly connected with the practice or application of chemistry in industry. The prize is awarded in odd-numbered years on the recommendation of the head of the Department of Chemical Engineering to the top student in the subjects CHE3071/3082 (Chemical engineering science), and in even-numbered years on the recommendation of the head of the Department of Chemistry to the top student in one of the pairs of subjects CHM3011/3022 (Chemistry) or CHM3031/3042 (Chemistry). The prize may be shared.


Department of Chemistry

Dulux Australia Prize in Chemistry

A prize of $750 is awarded annually to a chemistry student who has completed third year of the BSc course in the Faculty of Science and who is enrolled in the BSc (Honours) course in the Department of Chemistry. Students who are permanent residents of Australia, or of whom at least one parent is a permanent resident of Australia, are eligible. The prize is awarded on the basis of relevant academic achievement and short-listed applicants will be required to make an oral presentation to the Dulux Technical Management at Dulux. Selection criterion is academic achievement but consideration may be given to such factors as character, leadership, personality and financial need.

ICI Australia Prize in Chemistry

A prize of $300 is donated by ICI Research to be awarded annually to the student in any branch of chemistry who has shown the greatest proficiency in the BSc (Honours) year or in the masters Stage 1 course leading to the degree of Master of Science.

Dow Scholarship

Dow Chemical (Australia) Ltd provides funds annually for a scholarship valued at $1000 pa to be awarded to a student completing the degree of Bachelor of Science in the subject of chemistry. The scholarship is tenable in the second, third or honours year in the Faculty of Science and is awarded on the recommendation of a committee consisting of the head of the Department of Chemistry, a member of the Department of Chemistry, nominated by the head, and a representative of Dow Chemical (Australia) Ltd, nominated by the company. In awarding the scholarship the committee takes into account academic merit as demonstrated in the preceding annual examination in chemistry, qualities of character and personality and the personal circumstances of the candidate. The scholarship is only awarded to a candidate judged by the committee to be of sufficient merit.


Department of Computer Science

ACS Prize

A prize of $150 is awarded for excellence in third- year computer science.

Aspect Computing Scholarship

A scholarship valued at $1000 is awarded to a student completing second year and proceeding to third-year computer science, for the final year of their course on a full-time basis. The student must be an Australian resident. Students in permanent full-time employment or completing the course on an employer-subsidised basis are ineligible.

Open Software Associates Prizes

A prize of $500 awarded for the best project in honours.

A prize of $500 awarded for the best coursework results in honours.


Department of Earth Sciences

Two prizes of $1000 are awarded to the top two students completing both of the two first-year earth sciences subjects and proceeding to enrol in the two second-year earth science eight-point major subjects.

Two prizes of $500 for the third and fourth top students, as above.

Aberfoyle Resources Prize

A prize of $250 for the top second-year student in geology.

Aberfoyle Resources Prize

A prize of $250 for the top third-year student in geology and/or geophysics.

CRA Exploration Prize

A prize of $500 for the top third-year student in mapping.

Pasminco Exploration Prize

A prize of $2000 for the most promising third-year student in geology.

Western Mining Prize for `Hard Rock' Geology

A prize of $500 for the top honours student in the study of `hard rock' geology.

BHP Petroleum Prize

A prize of $500 for the top honours student in the field of petroleum geoscience.

Esso Australia Prizes

A prize of $500 for the top honours student in the field of geophysics.

Postgraduate Earth Sciences Publication Prize

A prize of $250 for the best published journal paper by a postgraduate student.


Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology

A R Wallace Prize

A prize of $150 for the best botany/zoology honours student.


Department of Geography and Environmental Science

J S Duncan Prize

A prize of $500 is awarded for the best honours thesis in geography and environmental science to a student who achieves an overall grade of Honours I in his or her honours year and whose thesis is judged by the staff of the department to be of outstanding merit.


Department of Mathematics

Leo Gleeson Prize

A prize of $650 for the best honours student in applied mathematics.

Carl Moppert Prize in Mathematics

A prize of $100 for the best all-round mathematics honours student.

Pure Mathematics Prize

A prize of $100 for the outstanding honours student in pure mathematics.

Mathematical Statistics Prize

A prize of $100 for the best honours student in mathematical statistics.


Department of Microbiology

Ed Westaway Prize

A prize of $200 and a certificate is awarded annually to the top microbiology honours student.


Department of Pathology and Immunology

Nairn Medal

Awarded to the top BSc Honours student each year. The awardee receives an engraved medal and a cheque for $200.


Department of Pharmacology

Geoff Bentley Prize

A prize of textbooks to the value of $250 awarded, based on academic merit, to the best third-year student who proceeds into honours or postgraduate studies in pharmacology.

Alan Boura - Wellcome Australia Prize

A prize of $300 for the top honours student in pharmacology in recognition of Professor Alan Boura's contribution to teaching and research in the discipline. The prize will include a book of the student's choice and a Monash University shield.


Department of Physics

J J McNeill Prize for Physics

A prize of $350 is awarded to the top honours student from amongst those enrolled in physics, applied physics or theoretical physics. The names of the recipients are displayed on a board in the Department of Physics.


Department of Psychology

Australian Psychological Society Prize in Psychology

A prize of $300 plus a letter from the APS president that recognises excellence is awarded to the student who gains first place at the end of either an APS accredited course in psychology of four years duration leading to a single qualification or an APS accredited fourth-year course in psychology comprising the equivalent of one year of full-time study. One APS Prize in Psychology will be given at each institution that has independent membership of the Australian Vice-Chancellors' Committee and has APS accredited courses of the above type(s). Recipients of the prize will have their processing fee for application for associated membership of the APS waived if they make application within twelve months of completing their course of study in psychology. Recipients will also have their conference registration fee paid by the society if they present a paper based on their thesis at the APS annual conference in the year following the completion of their course of study.


School of Applied Science - Gippsland Campus

Clarence Claude Fisher Award

A number of awards typically of $200 to $600 per student, based on academic merit and requirement for assistance, are available annually to students enrolled in undergraduate degree courses in the School of Applied Science.

RACI Gippsland Chemistry Awards

+ An award of $200 plus one year's student membership of the RACI is awarded on academic merit.

+ A cash award of $50 and student membership of the RACI is awarded for the best third-year chemistry project.

APM Maryvale Mill Scholarships

Two awards of $5000 are made on the basis of academic merit for students studying full-time at first, second or third year in applied science, business or engineering, who are proceeding to a further year of full-time study.

Coal Corporation of Victoria

Three awards of $1000 are open to students enrolled in applied science and are made on the basis of academic merit to full-time students in their second year, who are proceeding to full-time study at third-year level.

AusIMM Student Prize

An annual prize of $500 to be awarded to the student excelling in the application of the environmental sciences to the mining industry.

ASOR Scholarship

An award of $500 plus one year's membership of the Australian Society of Operations Research is open to students studying operations research at fourth-year level, based on academic merit at third-year level.
