Objectives On the completion of this subject students will be able to evaluate published research results and theoretical analyses of psychological issues; be able to design empirical studies and to analyse statistically the results of such studies; be able to write research reports in the form required in professional psychological journals; have achieved an understanding of the essential concepts and critical findings in a range of areas of contemporary psychology; have developed the knowledge and skills base necessary to undertake advanced study and professional training in psychology.
Synopsis The aim of this subject is to provide advanced training in a broad range of areas of experimental psychology both for students who wish to obtain an accredited major in psychology and proceed to honours and graduate study and for students wishing to study the subject at this level for other reasons. The subject comprises a core unit on statistics and experimental design together with optional units. The optional units comprise introduction to psycholinguistics; auditory sensory processes; human ethology; human factors psychology; or a unit to be announced. In addition to the core lecture series, students will be required to complete two optional units as lecture-plus-laboratory units and one optional unit as a lecture-only unit.
