Processes and applications of psychology

6 points + Three 1-hour lectures and 2 hours of laboratory class per week on average + Second semester + Clayton + Prerequisites: PSY1011

Objectives During this subject students will achieve an understanding, from lectures, laboratory classes, and guided reading, of the fundamentals of cognitive processes and human information processing, the elements of animal and human conditioning, and the developmental stages followed by the maturing organism; acquire the basics of inferential statistics and gain experience with the application of inferential statistics during laboratory classes and formal demonstrations; learn how to collect empirical data, subject it to appropriate analysis, and incorporate it meaningfully in a research report where the implications of such findings are considered within the context of existing theory.

Synopsis This subject builds on the material dealt with in PSY1011 and covers the following topics: sensory processes and perception, cognitive processes, learning, development, inferential statistics, and some applications of modern psychology. The laboratory classes are intended to illustrate various topics dealt with in lectures together with the applications of statistical principles to analyse psychological data, and include computer-based exercises.

Assessment Examination (3 hours): 50%) + Laboratory/Practical work: 35% + Statistics assignment: 15%
