48 points + Full-year subject, comprising formal class contact and private study + Clayton + Prerequisites: Third-year physics subjects including the compulsory units `Electromagnetism', `Statistical mechanics', `Quantum mechanics', `Applications of quantum mechanics', `Nuclear physics' and `Solid state physics (lattice and electronic properties'

Synopsis At least eight units are to be taken, with `Quantum mechanics', `Quantum field theory', `Solid state physics' and `Statistical mechanics' being compulsory. Students are required to complete a research project involving some original work on a topic chosen in consultation with their supervisor.

Assessment Examinations (normally 8 x 2 hours): 50% + Theoretical project: 50%
