Dr Andrew Smith

12 points + Six 1-hour lectures and a 1-hour seminar class per week + Second semester + Clayton + Prerequisites: As for PHS3131

Objectives The aim of this subject is to introduce students to some of the basic physics that underpins a modern university pPhysics course. At the successful conclusion of this subject students will be able to understand a range of fundamental concepts from the core units of `Quantum mechanics', `Nuclear physics' and `Solid state physics'; apply a series of theoretical techniques within this subject core; extend mastery of this core to related subject areas of knowledge of particular interest to the student; write up short reports on topics in theoretical physics; present a short seminar on a topic in theoretical physics.

Synopsis This subject can be taken together with another twelve-point third-year subject, including PHS3042 or PHS3162. The subject consists of six units which may be chosen from any of the third-year physics units offered by the department. The compulsory units are `Quantum mechanics', `Nuclear physics' and `Solid state physics (lattice and electronic properties)'. The remaining three units will normally be chosen from physics units listed but approval may be granted for a subject or unit from another department.

Assessment Examinations (6 x 1.5 hours): 100%
