Applied statistics

4 points + Second semester + Clayton + Prerequisites: MAS2011 + Corequisites: MAS2032 + Prohibitions: GAS3631

Objectives On the completion of this subject students will be able to perform tests of hypotheses for one and two sample problems involving means, medians (nonparametric tests), variances and proportions; recognise which test is most appropriate for a particular statistical problem; perform analyses of variance for a variety of experimental designs; use graphical techniques and tests of goodness of fit to check the suitability of a particular distribution for a given data set; analyse data in contingency tables using chi-squared tests and other techniques; find relationships between two variables using least squares regression and other techniques; fit multiple linear regression models; use MINITAB to perform the above statistical analyses and to interpret the results obtained from MINITAB.

Synopsis Introduction to MINITAB. Sampling from a finite population; the binomial, Poisson and hypergeometric distributions. Contingency tables. Chi-squared tests. Simulation. Correlation and regression. Residual plots. One- and two-way analysis of variance. Introduction to graphics.

Assessment Examinations (1.5 hours): 80% + Tests and/or assignments: 20%
