Real analysis

4 points + First semester + Clayton + Prerequisites: A 12-point sequence in first-year mathematics including MAT1010 or MAT1020 (a credit grade or higher in MAT1050 is an acceptable alternative to a pass in MAT1010) + Prohibitions: GAS2611

Objectives On the completion of this subject students will have a stronger grasp of the basic theoretical aspects of calculus; be aware of the rich and subtle nature of the real number system; better understand the power and limitations of calculus; be equipped for further studies in the many subjects based on calculus or analysis.

Synopsis The real number system. Sequences and series of real numbers. Continuity, differentiation and integration. Sequences and series of functions; uniform convergence. Taylor series and Fourier series.

Assessment Examinations (1.5 hours): 80% + Assignments: 10% + Tests: 10%
