Objectives On the completion of this subject students will be able to: solve simple physical problems which are modelled by the wave equation, the diffusion equation and the Laplace equation; analyse the effects of various types of boundary and/or initial conditions on the solutions of these equations; derive the basic mathematical properties of these equations.
Synopsis The wave equation, energy inequality, the heat equation, maximum principle, the Laplace equation. Poisson's formula, Dirichlet and Neumann boundary problems, well-posed problems.
