Regional geophysics

6 points + First semester + Clayton + twelve weeks lecture/practical coursework + Prohibitions: GPS3011, GPS3022

Objectives This subject will be give a broad introduction to geophysical methods for students interested in the application of physics and mathematics for mineral exploration and general earth studies. On completion students will be able to acquire and process gravity and magnetic data using potential field theory and FFT techniques; enabled to manipulate geophysical data for image processing systems to assist with geological mapping; enabled to construct numerical models to describe geophysical domains and regional structures impacting on earth response and global evolution; enabled to model geophysical response for mineral exploration, hydrological studies, and geotechnical applications.

Synopsis Methods for gathering, processing and interpreting gravity; magnetic and radiometric data are presented with geological constraints for regional mapping and ground selection. This subject is completed with an introduction to image processing techniques for anomaly recognition and trend analysis.

Assessment Practical assignments: 40% + Continuous assessment: 10% + 2 hour examination: 50%.
