Objectives On the completion of this subject students will have developed an increased understanding of modern genetics and developmental biology; mastered experimental skills in the applications of modern techniques for the investigation of genetic and developmental questions; developed the ability to initiate independent research and to show initiative and creativity in research planning; developed skills in scientific methods and in the scientific communication of ideas both verbally and in writing; gained skills in teaching as an aid in understanding and communicating ideas to others; experienced the applications of computing for data analysis and communication; learnt to collaborate and communicate with staff as academic colleagues.

Synopsis An honours subject, GEN4000, is available to selected students. The subject will provide students with valuable practical experience in modern molecular genetics and experience in contributing to the solution of research problems of significance. Students taking this subject will be required to attend a special course of lectures delivered by academic staff from within the department and also from other institutions; will undertake a research project in some aspect of genetics and prepare a written report on the results; prepare two essays and prepare oral presentations on selected topics in genetics and developmental biology. The final assessment will involve consideration of all these various aspects of the subject. Prospective students should consult the head of the department.
