Objectives: On completion of this subject, students should be able to understand the relationship between IT, organisational management, and resource management strategies; identify the processes and potential problems involved in IS development and IT planning and management; identify operational management requirements of a system and understand the processes behind IT resourcing.
Synopsis Information management: information as a resource. Management information systems. Management strategy. IS planning and policies: IS planning strategies, IS organisation. Professions related to IS, managing IS personnel, organisational structure, administrative issues. Information and computing resource management: managing information services, information centres and the computer services department. Evaluation, selection and acquisition of hardware and software: acquisition philosophies; compatibility and connectivity concerns; industry standards; vendor relations; capacity planning; evaluation, selection and acquisition methodology; replacement considerations and strategies. Societal implications and future trends: security, integrity and privacy; job training and retraining; work attitude, commitment and motivation.
