Objectives Students completing this subject should be able to write UNIX shell scripts; use UNIX system calls from a C or C++ program; use lex and yacc to develop simple parsers.
Synopsis Systems programming techniques and system software tools. Using existing systems software: shell scripts, filters, debugging and other tools. Developing systems software: making operating system calls, techniques used in common systems programs. Compilers and interpreters: using lex and yacc to facilitate software development. Access to the university's computer systems via modem is compulsory for distance education students.
Assessment Assignments: 30% + Examination (3 hours): 70%
