Objectives Students completing this subject should be able to describe various categories of business information systems and their role in an organisation; define and apply each of the steps in an SDLC in terms of its objectives and relationship to the other activities in the SDLC; apply traditional and prototyping approaches to systems analysis and design.

Synopsis Introduction to business information systems. The systems development life cycle illustrated with case studies: problem definition; feasibility study; current system analysis; new system design; programming, debugging, testing, implementation, evaluation and maintenance. Analysis and design tools; information gathering techniques - interview and questionnaire; organisation charts; systems design flow charts; decision tables; data flow diagrams; documentation standards; forms design and screen formatting; file design; data dictionary; structure charts, prototyping, CASE tools.

Assessment:Two assignments: 50% + Examination (3 hours): 50%
