3 points + First semester + 2 hours per week + Gippsland/Distance + Prerequisites: GAS1611 (and GAS1612 is desirable)

Objectives The objectives of this subject are for students to achieve a basic geometric understanding of multivariable calculus techniques; develop dexterity with a range of computational techniques; achieve sufficient understanding of the techniques of calculus to apply these to the analysis of scientific, statistical and operations research problems.

Synopsis Continuity and differentiability of functions of more than one variable; Taylor's theorem for several variables and its consequences; extreme values; the method of Lagrange multipliers; multiple integrals; change of variable techniques; introduction to partial differential equations. For distance students, five two-hour problem-solving and expository classes are held over the semester to supplement self-contained notes, tutorial exercises and assignments.
