Environmental science 2 - environmental management issues

6 points + Second semester + 4 hours per week (2 x 1-hour lectures and 1 x 2 hours of practical/tutorial activity) + Gippsland /Distance

Objectives On completion of this subject students will be conversant with the basic physical and chemical processes which mould and influence the environment; be able to describe and recognise the significance of the component systems which comprise the biosphere; use such knowledge to comment critically on the environmental impacts and the sustainability of human activities such as mining, forestry and agriculture.

Synopsis This subject focuses on analysing and managing the environment. A systems approach is developed and used to explore various components of the environment, including the ecological, detrital and surficial systems. Aspects of technology and development impacts on the environment are considered. A case study based on a mine site rehabilitation is undertaken. The subject is taught on-campus by lectures and tutorial/practical activities and by distance education; no compulsory campus attendance is involved but coordinated local visits are expected.

Assessment Written assignments: 40% + End-of-semester examination: 60%
