Introduction to psychology B

6 points + Second semester + Two 1-hour lectures and one 2-hour laboratory/tutorial per week + Gippsland/Distance

Objectives On the completion of this subject students will be able to understand the basis for individual differences in human behaviour, how they develop, and the role of the social context; critically evaluate the distinction between normal and abnormal behaviour; develop further basic skills in the design and conduct of research, the statistical analysis and interpretation of results, and writing research reports.

Synopsis Together with GAS1501, this subject provides a general introduction to the science of psychology as a behavioural science, and as a basis for detailed study of specific areas of psychology. The major theme is a consideration of the factors that influence individual differences in human behaviour. The topics covered include human development, health, stress and coping, personality, psychological disorders and therapies, and social influences on human behaviour. Distance education students are required to attend six hours at weekend schools, including a laboratory session. Students for whom attendance is difficult can request permission to undertake alternative work.

Assessment Methodology assignment 2: 20% + Laboratory book: 10% + Essay: 20% + Examination: 50% + A pass on the examination is a requirement for successful completion of this subject.
