Introduction to psychology A

Objectives On the completion of this subject students will be able to understand the breadth of psychological theory and research, and how this knowledge is applied in the human context; describe the advantages of the scientific method in psychology; evaluate the major theoretical paradigms that have contributed to the development of the science of psychology; understand the biological basis of human behaviour, and the processes of learning, memory, cognition, and motivation; have a basic knowledge of how to conduct psychological research, statistical analysis, interpret research results and perform critical analysis of past research and report current research.

Synopsis This subject, together with GAS1502, provides a general introduction to the discipline of psychology as a behavioural science, and as a basis for further detailed study of specific areas of psychology. The major theme of the subject is a study of the basic principles of behaviour with an emphasis on experimental methods and laboratory techniques in psychology. The topics covered include the biological bases of behaviour, the processes of human learning (conditioning and cognitive processes), sensation and perception, states of consciousness, motivation and emotion. Distance education students are required to attend at least six hours at weekend schools including a laboratory session. Students for whom attendance is difficult can request permission to undertake alternative work.

Assessment Methodology assignment 1: 15% + Methodology assignment 2: 25% + Laboratory book: 10% + Examination: 50% + A pass on the examination is a requirement for successful completion of this subject.
