Structural geology

Dr David Gray

6 points + 5 hours per week + First semester + eleven weeks lecture/practical course with 2 to 3-day field excursion to Lake Glemaggie. + Prerequisites: ESC2011 + Prohibitions: ESC3011, ESC3022, ESC3051, ESC3062 (refer to department for advice)

Objectives This subject aims to provide a basic understanding of rock deformation principles related to development of structures within deformed rocks; instruct students in the techniques of modern structural geology to help unravel complexly deformed rocks; provide the student with the basic structural tools to help in the mapping and interpretation of crustal regions with deformed rock sequences; examine the structures and processes associated with the development of active, or recently active, orogenic belts and to show how such knowledge can help us to interpret ancient orogens.

Synopsis An advanced subject in structural geology concentrating on the structures developed in areas of metamorphic rocks and in areas deformed more than once. Practical work concentrates on the structures of deformed rocks, on the mechanisms of both brittle and ductile deformation and analysis of poly-deformed terrains.

Assessment Examinations (3 hours): 50% + Practical work: 25% + Field assignment: 15% + Seminar: 10%
