Database management systems

4 points + Two 1-hour lectures per week + Clayton + Prerequisites: As for CSC3010 + Corequisites: As for CSC3030 + Prohibitions: BUS2112, CFR2132, CFR2201, COT2132, COT2138, COT2180, COT2901, COT3180, GCO2815

Objectives On completion of the subject students will be able to make queries using SQL; design and implement a relational database; write application programs for a database in the INGRES environment.

Synopsis This subject provides a comprehensive knowledge of the problems of complex database management systems and database organisation. Both theoretical and pragmatic approaches will be presented to the problems of logical data description, organisation and manipulation. Topics include data models, normalisation, query languages, fourth generation languages, integrity and security.

Assessment Examination (2 hours): 80% + Practical work: 20%
