Graduate nursing studies I : caring in nursing

Objectives In undertaking this subject, students are expected to examine philosophical underpinnings of caring in nursing; analyse critically theories of caring in nursing; examine patient's descriptions of illness and caring; develop advanced skills in reflection, analysis, argument and constructive criticism; evaluate critically their own caring practice.

Synopsis The subject examines in depth the concept of caring in nursing, from a diverse range of perspectives. Caring is seen to be linked with religion, politics, language, economics, cultural values and philosophy. Philosophical views are presented from the existentialists such as Heidegger, Bubber, Mayeroff, and theories of caring such as those presented by Watson, Leininger, Benner and Noddings are examined critically. Patient's descriptions of illness and their views of nurses as carers will also be examined.

Assessment Seminar presentation: 40% + Written analytical essay: 60%
