Politics of health

Objectives On completion of the subject the students are expected to identify the nature of politics and the political aspects of nurses' work; compare and contrast major conceptualisations of health policy process; consider and appraise the contemporary developments in government policy in relation to nursing; examine the political structuring of the nurse and patient/client relationship; gain an understanding of the role of individuals, groups, political parties and state instrumentalities in policy formation and implementation; engage in political debate and discussion over nursing issues; and explore illness and disease from a political perspective.

Synopsis The subject explores the political context of nursing and examines both the wider political context of health policy and nursing and politics as a fundamental aspect of everyday nursing practice. Students will be encouraged to gain an insight into the political aspects of this practice area and the health policies governing them.

Assessment Seminar Paper: 30% + Health policy case study: 70%
