History and philosophy of nursing

Objectives On completion of the subject the student should be able to explore critically schools of philosophical thought that have influenced the development of the discipline of nursing; explore the influences of the dominant philosophies of science on nursing science and knowledge development; examine the philosophical positions of various methods of inquiry that contribute to the development of the discipline of nursing; explore the formation of caring discourses in contemporary nursing history.

Synopsis This subject expands upon prior studies that relate to the discipline of nursing and includes historical and philosophical perspectives that have influenced this development. In addition the subject examines changing trends in the philosophy of science in relation to nursing knowledge development.

Assessment Assignment (2000 words): 50% + Poster presentation: 50%
