Objectives On completion of this subject the students are expected to examine an historical perspective on the development of public health and community health as a distinct area of nursing knowledge and practice; describe the key concepts of contemporary models of community health including the health field concept, new public health and primary health care; describe community health in an Australian context, identifying the key services and policies; apply the elements of primary health care principles to community health nursing roles; apply a cross-cultural perspective to community health nursing; identify and utilise needs assessment strategies that facilitate the provision of community health for client populations; explore community development and community participation strategies utilised in the processes of community health nursing practice; utilise evaluation processes for community health nursing; demonstrate an ability to work effectively and collaboratively with professionals and lay support workers in community health; and analyse contemporary professional issues and trends in community health nursing.
Synopsis This subject is designed to provide the student with the opportunity to develop professional foundations in the nursing speciality of community health. The focus of the subject is on a number of related themes; a comprehensive model of community health; introduction to public health concepts; community health nursing practice roles, standards and competencies; community health needs assessment and health screening; culture and health; and an examination of specific professional issues.
Assessment Essay: 50% + Fieldwork (2 reports): 50% + Clinical: satisfactory achievement of specific clinical objectives is required for a pass to be awarded in the subject
