Integrated mental health care

Objectives On completion of the subject it is expected that students will be able to describe the characteristics of an efficient and cost effective comprehensive mental health service; discuss the merits of a stress-vulnerability model for intervention in mental disorders and their carers; integrate patients and carers into the clinical management of major mental disorders; teach patients and their carers effective interpersonal communication skills and problem solving methods; assist people with major mental disorders to maximise their quality of life in the community through the use of living skills training; describe the essential elements of home-based intensive care.

Synopsis The subject is based upon the Comprehensive Management of Mental Disorders (COMMEND) program developed by Professor Ian Falloon and Mr Victor Graham-Hole. The program has been redeveloped for distance education by the subject coordinator in collaboration with Professor Falloon.

Assessment Written assignment (3000 words): 70% + Computer conference exercises: 30%
