Objectives On completion of this subject students are expected to plan and implement nursing interventions of patients suffering from common mental disorders including organic mental syndromes and disorders, schizophrenia and other psychotic disorders, mood disorders, anxiety disorders and personality disorders; utilise a range of skills including observation, interviewing, listening, counselling, limit setting, reality orientation, teaching, problem solving; initiate and maintain therapeutic relationships with patients and their families; teach patients and their families stress-management strategies; participate in a range of therapeutic interventions including somatic therapies, group and individual psychotherapy, milieu therapy; practice in accordance with relevant legislation and professional ethics; and develop a greater awareness of personal attitudes and values and the effect of these upon the therapeutic use of self when working with people with mental disorders.
Synopsis The subject is designed to provide the student with a range of supervised clinical experiences in general health and specialise in patient and community psychiatric settings. Areas include acute care (inpatient and community), early intervention, crisis intervention, continuing care, psychiatric rehabilitation, specialist areas, eg drug and alcohol, psychogeriatrics, and child and adolescent services.
