Objectives When students have completed this subject they will be expected to be able to explain the term advanced nursing practice in the context of nursing in general, and more specifically nursing in terms of the student's specific are of nursing practice; compare and contrast the practice of nurses who function at advanced levels with the practice of other nurses at differing levels of competence and experience; provide some specific examples of advanced nursing practice; discuss the academic and clinical preparation of the advanced nursing practitioner with particular emphasis on the preparation of the individual clinical nurse specialist; analyse the functions of the clinical nurse specialist with particular emphasis on his or her contribution to clinical practice, education, administration, consultation and research.
Synopsis This subject examines the concept of clinical nurse specialities in relation to current issues and challenges in the chosen speciality in Australia. Students will be given the opportunity to develop advanced clinical skills in a speciality of nursing. By means of an advanced clinical skills work book, students will be expected to examine and question their own practice.
