Objectives Through reflective and skill development exercises, interactive seminars and field studies, it is expected that upon completion the student will be able to expand on concepts from previous studies of health and nursing; identify, analyse and evaluate national and international primary health care and health promotion initiatives with special reference to the work of the World Health Authority (WHO); examine the concept of primary health care as a philosophy, a goal for health and method of service delivery in relation to nursing practice; identify major community health problems combining various methods and data collection and analysis within the popu lation-based approaches; apply principles of primary health care practice and examine the nursing developments nationally and internationally towards the achievement of goal of health for all; apply primary health care framework to undertake a health promotion project or health needs assessment.
Synopsis Health education, promotion and primary health care is studied in conjunction with epidemiological and other methods as a basis for assessment and evaluation of health status of communities. Emphasis will be placed on the aims and methods of health promotion; community health and development; evaluation skills, personal health care and population health in Australia and issues related to developing countries will be critically examined.
Assessment Assignment 80% and seminar presentation or alternative written work 20%
