Objectives It is anticipated that in undertaking this subject, students will be expected to demonstrate critical thinking and analysis skills and translate learning needs into goal-directed activities; examine the `expanding health field model' to develop an understanding of health care trends and future issues; critically examine the influence of the major determinants of health on the nursing profession; develop a conceptual framework for political and professional debate of nursing issues at national and international level; analyse contemporary and predicted trends and issues in the health care delivery system, their outcomes and practice of nursing; demonstrate potential for leadership roles, initiating and managing change to enhance health outcomes.

Synopsis This subject aims to focus on development of critical thinking and analysis skills in relation to national and international political and professional debate on nursing and health. Students will be introduced to advanced leadership practices of health advancement to the year 2000. Major trends and issues in health, health care, the determinants of health and the contribution of nursing to health outcomes will be examined.

Assessment Two assignments: 80% and one seminar 20%
