Objectives On completing this subject students will demonstrate their ability to describe the characteristics of the ideal living environment for the older residents in the Australian society; provide evidence of their capacity to recognise and describe any actual and/or potential communication problems that might affect the quality of the lives of older individuals; understand and apply the principles of rehabilitation of elderly individuals to their gerontological nursing practice; demonstrate their capacity to apply the nursing process to the multiple needs of aged people; describe the nursing interventions that could assist in the promotion of wellness and self care of aged people; demonstrate their capacity to recognise specific problems and to initiate and implement actions that might assist in the resolution of these problems.
Synopsis This subject develops an understanding of gerontic nursing as a speciality and explores the knowledge and skills required to provide effective care of elderly people. It has a psychosocial perspective.
