Objectives Classroom, laboratory, and clinically based learning activities are expected to enable students to demonstrate preoperative education and assessment of patients undergoing cardiac, vascular, thoracic, renal, plastic and neuro surgery; cognitive and psychomotor skills relating to surgical intervention in order to provide nursing support and assistance during the intraoperative phase of cardiac, vascular, thoracic, renal, plastic and neurosurgery; postoperative assessment and evaluation of these patients.
Synopsis Students will learn theoretical and clinical concepts of cardiac, vascular, thoracic, renal, plastic and neuro surgical intervention in adults and children. They will utilise knowledge of the nursing process, anatomy and pathophysiology in order to assess the needs of the individual surgical patient. Students will have the opportunity to consolidate cognitive, psychomotor and affective skills required to perform nursing practices within the perioperative environment.
