Objectives Through a variety of in-class, clinically based and student driven activities, this subject should enable students to demonstrate an understanding of the theoretical basis, preventive measures, nursing care and therapeutics related to the renal impaired adult/child; develop knowledge and skills necessary to provide therapeutic nursing interventions in the care of the acute/chronic ill renal impaired patient; compare and contrast various treatment modalities identifying nursing interventions to enable the needs of the patient and significant others to be met; explore the complex health needs of patients experiencing acute and chronically impaired renal function and the impact on the family and society; develop an understanding of relevant rehabiliative processes and the role of health maintenance and prevention in the renal impaired patient; develop an appreciation of the psychosocial needs of the individual and significant others requiring dialysis therapies; demonstrate an increasing knowledge of therapeutic agents in terms of relevant legislation and sage nursing practice; discuss a variety of complex and ethical and legal issues related to the renal impaired adult/child; appreciate the multicultural health care concerns in the Australian population.
Synopsis Students will be provided with theoretical knowledge about caring for clients with renal impairment and will explore various therapeutic nursing strategies and technologies associated with renal replacement therapy. The opportunity to engage in nephrology nursing practice is provided through a clinical component and field experience.
Assessment An examination, a written report and by clinical performance.
