Objectives Classroom, laboratory and clinically based learning activities are expected to enable students to demonstrate application of the nursing process to care of patients undergoing and recovering from surgery and anaesthesia; knowledge of principles of general, regional and local anaesthesia in adults and children; monitoring and maintenance of fluid and electrolyte balance and blood replacement therapy in patients undergoing and recovering from surgery and anaesthesia; appropriate technical and nursing assistance during anaesthesia.
Synopsis The focus of this subject is on a number of principles specific to anaesthesia in adults and children. Nursing assessment, planning, intervention and evaluation practices are developed for the patient undergoing and recovering from surgery and anaesthesia. Clinical nursing problems relating to fluid and electrolyte balance, blood replacement therapy, physiologic monitoring, and non anaesthetic drug administration are addressed.
