Objectives Through a variety of in-class, clinically based and student driven activities, this subject should enable students to analyse the interrelationships and processes of various psychosocial and physiological concepts; apply these concepts to various patient situations and critical care settings; appreciate that emotions, attitudes and thoughts are imbedded in the illness experience of critically ill patients; determine the antecedent conditions, behavioural definitions and subjective data of psycho-social phenomenon; identify and apply appropriate nursing.
Synopsis Students are helped to analyse various psycho-social and physiological concepts when caring for critically ill patients. Concepts such as vulnerability, loss of identity control, vigilance, alterations to body image, crisis, chronicity, spiritual distress and altered behaviours are applied in the clinical practicum.
Assessment A written essay, an analysis of an illness experience in relation to one of the concepts and observations of patient care.
