Synopsis This subject aims to provide a structured learning experience so that students may comprehend the principles, develop basic skills, and appreciate the contribution of health economics and health program evaluation to the practice of public health. At the completion of this subject students should be able to understand key economic concepts and their role in increasing welfare; examine the special characteristics of health care as an economic commodity; assess the usefulness and limitations of economic analysis in promoting an efficient and equitable health care system; understand the basic types and role of economic appraisal in the evaluation of health care services; state and explain the evaluation strategies appropriate to the particular stages of the program cycle; explain the differences between process, impact and outcome evaluation; and explain the different types of evaluation design and discuss their strengths and weaknesses. Teaching will be in the form of lectures and tutorials (including student-led appraisal presentations).
