Synopsis The aim of this subject is to provide students with a general introduction to environmental influences, including infectious diseases and occupational hazards on health. Students will also gain an understanding of the interaction between the environment and genetic factors related to health. At the completion of this subject, students should be able to describe environmental physical, chemical and biological hazards; demonstrate an understanding of the principles of environmental and occupational hazard assessment and control, including risk; describe the methods used in hazard management; and effectively communicate environmental hazard and risk data. This subject contains the interaction of genetic background, personal, physical and social environment in determining health, control of communicable disease, monitoring and control of occupational and environmental hazards, risk assessment, risk perception and communication, legislation, food quality, water and air quality monitoring, radiation hazards, waste disposal. Teaching will be a mixture of lectures, tutorials, case studies and workplace visits.
