Objectives On completion of this unit, students should have developed a
sound understanding of the normal function, structure and pharmacology of the
human central nervous system. Students should be able to interpret CT and MR
images of the brain and have developed skills in applying basic principles of
neuroscience to the diagnosis of neurological disorders.
Synopsis A comprehensive approach to the study of the central nervous
system will be provided. The program will consist of a detailed dissection of
the human brain in combination with an analysis of its motor, sensory and
integrative functions. In addition, it will provide a basis for the
understanding of neuropharmacology. Throughout the program the clinical aspects
of central nervous system function will be emphasised, with correlation classes
covering such areas as the examination of the nervous system, brain imaging,
diagnosis and treatment of selected disorders.
Assessment Examinations - MCQ, short-answer and essay (3 hrs): 90% +
