Paediatrics

9-week rotation (combined with Obstetrics and Gynaecology)

Objectives On completion of this subject students will have an understanding of the physical, intellectual and emotional growth and development of children and be able to apply this to effective history taking and physical examination; the principles of management of seriously ill children and develop skills in their recognition; the principles of management of common disorders occurring in children and of disorders which occur predominantly in children and develop skills in their recognition; the implications for the patient, the family and the community of the failure of normal growth and development in children and the facilities available for dealing with them.

Synopsis Nine weeks of teaching, integrated with the clinical teaching program in obstetrics and gynaecology. Clinical teaching at a peripheral hospital, emphasising primary care and community paediatrics, experience in newborn care and paediatric emergencies, visits to maternal and child health centres and early intervention programs. Clinical teaching in a city hospital with patient clerking and management practice, specialty teaching clinics and tutorials, paediatric emergencies and a lecture series covering introduction to principles of paediatrics as well as concepts and problems peculiar to paediatrics. Bedside tutorials throughout focus on history taking and physical examination and paediatric management issues.

Assessment Continual assessment: 20% + MCQ exam: 30% + OSCA exam: 25% + Clinical exam: 25%
