Objectives On completion of this subject, students will have an understanding of individual and community-based approaches to prevention of important chronic diseases; the political and economic determinants of priorities for action in preventive and occupational medicine; the principles of evaluation and control of hazards in the workplace; patterns of occupational illness, multidisciplinary aspects of management and the interacting roles of prevention, compensation and rehabilitation in relation to it; the broad preventive aspects of clinical illness; the requirements and importance of an occupational medical history.
Synopsis Seminars and small group teaching at the commencement of term one and term three covering prevention of obesity, osteoporosis, blindness, deafness, skin cancer and cardiovascular diseases, the role of maternal and infant health services, occupational health and work cover. This is followed by a worksite visit in term three.
Assessment Worksite visit report (satisfactory faculty requirement) + Contribution to MCQ: 30% (of final mark) + Contribution to OSCA: 30% (of final mark)
