Objectives At the completion of this subject students will have an understanding of a range of scientific methodologies used to carry out medical research and its application to enable further progress in the wider field of clinical medicine; the challenge of medical research and its potential role in their future careers; the breadth and quality of research being carried out in their own faculty; the processes involved in analysis and interpretation of research data; feedback and appraisal from a prepared written report and oral presentation.
Synopsis Working in groups of three or four, students select an area of research from within Monash University departments, research institutes or hospitals. Practical involvement in the chosen research area will be for a minimum of eight to ten hours and will include preparation of an oral presentation as well as a written report. Each group will review background information, research planning and methodology, project conclusions and future directions and the relevance of their research area to the wider medical community. A limited number of groups will present projects to the entire fourth-year class.
