Synopsis Students will spend five days in a rural setting where they will be provided with the opportunity to experience a breadth of common clinical problems, learning how they are managed in the rural context. The clinical experience will be gained through visits with general practitioners and other health professionals including nursing staff of rural and remote hospitals. Students may also gain experience in aspects of dealing with emergencies in the rural setting, aboriginal health, community health/public health and health promotion.
Assessment (a) Each student will keep a log diary of clinical problems during their attachment. (b) A report on one patient's illness including management and its consequences in a rural setting (500 words). (c) A critical description of the rural placement focussing on medical, community and lifestyle issues if they were a rural doctor (1000 words maximum).
