Objectives On completion of this subject students should (1) have an understanding of, and be able to critically evaluate, the methods for prescribing and maintaining standards of safety in the workplace and (2) have an understanding of the role of courts and legislatures in workplace safety.
Synopsis The subject involves a study of Victorian and Federal laws on occupational health and safety, in particular the Occupational Health and Safety Act 1985 (Vic.). Topics examined include methods of regulation of workplace safety (self-regulation; criminal prosecution; common law negligence); chemicals in the workplace and their control; repetitive strain injuries; the powers of safety representatives; the right to stop work; responsibilities of employers and employees in occupational health and safety.
Assessment Written research assignment (5000 words): 50% + Class participation: 10% + Final or take-home examination: 40%
