Objectives On completion on this subject students should (1) understand the rationale for and the principles which underpin various systems of labour relations; and (2) be able to identify factors and influences which have determined the operation of different systems of labour relations from collective bargaining to arbitration.
Synopsis This subject explores the rationale for and the principles underpinning the study of labour relations, together with a survey of recent international trends in both collective bargaining and trade unionism. Areas of study will include the systems for industrial dispute resolution and determining employment conditions in such countries as the USA, Canada, Japan and Europe, including Great Britain, as well as the Australian system.
Assessment Written research assignment (5000 words): 50% + Class participation: 10% + Final or take-home examination: 40%
