Objectives The student is expected to acquire further knowledge and understanding of the main stream 16-bit microprocessor architectures and applications.

Synopsis The internal architecture of a typical modern microprocessor central processing unit, the arithmetic logic unit, registers, control unit, their properties and usage. The instruction set and programming techniques as related to the hardware resources of the microprocessor. The structure and use of memory, various kinds of memory such as static and dynamic random access memory (RAM), concepts of memory management, the use of read only memory (ROM) in storing programs. Input and output operation in both parallel and serial modes. Direct memory access (DMA) controllers for fast data transfer. Interrupt controllers and their application in conjunction with interrupt priority control. Data communication standards and techniques such as current loop interface, RS232 and IEEE488. Error detection and correction.

Assessment Class tests: 50% + Tutorial work/laboratory work: 50%
